Dare I Share This Embarrassing Story?
When we get vulnerable and ‘GET REAL’ we can often do a better job connecting to and relating with our audience.
I shared an embarrassing story within my latest ‘Intentionally Brav’e talk. Firstly, I had to take the workshop and course content and squeeze it into a 20 slides presentation, which advanced after 20 seconds. It’s a fast talk called a Petcha Kutcha, and I was doing this for the first time. Telling a real story to provide an example about the topic is always helpful. When it’s a personal story, that’s a great way to connect with the audience. I decided to also film my talk, and then had to be personally and Intentionally Brave, when I decided to upload it to YouTube. The Video and Lessons Learned from my first Petcha Kutcha next.
Lessons Learned From My First Petcha Kutcha
Yes, I would tweek my presentation/talk a bit after sharing it for the first time as a Petcha Kutcha, very fast presentation’. I only had enough time for 20 slides, which advanced after 20 seconds. A story often takes 2 or 3 slides, and is an important part of any presentation. Include solid content, but don’t try to pack in too much. Visuals are a great addition to the content. Handouts are always helpful, and this way you can include contact information, and details or text that you aren’t including on your slide. I forgot to introduce myself at the beginning of the recording because the group I was talking to already knew me. I decided to not add a recorded intro to the YouTube video and just let it jump into the talk. Next time I will also work on a sold ending, because when slides are timed, it’s easy to feel rushed and forget to pause right after closing. A Petcha Kutcha at a conference would be set up a bit different with a formal introduction before I start talking.
- Include a Story: it connects with the audience, even with a short time frame.
- Have even less content, so that you have time to pause for laughter
- A funny story or joke is always a good idea
- It is possible to include props and a short video clip within a Petcha Kutcha
- You can share a good amount of information within 5 or 6 minutes speach/talk
- Handouts are always a good idea!
- Interaction is tough, but a quick question, show of hands is one way to have audience interaction
- Too short for a lot of interaction, don’t try to squeeze in too much content
- Be concise with the information, and provide GREAT content of value
- Work on a strong Beginning and ENDING!
