Words We Use
What does Content Creation mean to you?
The words and language we use matter. Two people can have two different ideas on what a topic is, depending on their context and their experience with that word.
The one day I was using the word ‘content creation’ and my colleague thought I was talking about the ‘content’ or topic that a person is training about, not the materials created. I was glad that we discussed our different understanding of the term, since I am sorting out how I market what I do.
Let’s break down the two perspectives on what is ‘content creation’:
Topic
What is being communicated as a ‘topic’, could be considered the ‘content’. This topic could be written, spoken, or using a variety of mediums to share. The dictionary also defines ‘content’ as what is inside the container. The container mediphorically, could be the method of how the content is being shared. The topic may be researched academically, or for professional development. There could be an educational purpose for the presentation or article. Professionally or personally, the ‘content’ could be through a blog, or post, presentation, workshop or publication (to provide some examples). This is Content Creation, with the understanding that content is the topic, or what is being shared.
Product
A big part is how ‘it’ is being communicated, and this can be the other way to view Content Creation. Creatives, or people who are creating something that did not exist before, may use a variety of mediums. The process or production is in part self expression. The communication intends to educate others about a topic, perspective, or share a story/experience. The end products or content creations could be for marketing, publication, income generation, value-added free materials, or a way that a person is expressing themselves creatively. The content is sharing a message, communicating information, or could be more abstract. Examples include:
Written word: Articles, blogs, posts, papers, books
Spoken word: pod casts, keynotes, presentations
Videos: vlogs, YouTube videos, animations, videography, tutorials
Posts: social media, designs, logos, infographics
Visuals: photography, illustrations, drawings, sketches
Content Creation
If people don’t know what you do, how you can help them? If they don’t understand what services you provide, they can’t get the solutions to their problems. Content creation may mean different things to different people, therefore understanding how people think can help you communicate what they are looking for. I am a content creator, in the duel form of speaking and facilitating about a topic in order to train or educate, and I create vlogs, videos, and multi-media content in order to share messages and add to the learning experience.
Let me know if this is clear for you.
