Technology is great…when it works.
Have you ever had your computer crash, or technology fail you? Did you have a backup plan in place?
This week I experienced something that any entrepreneur/online facilitator never wants to have happen! My main computer crashed. Technology sometimes fails. My computer is only two years old and the hard drive just stopped working. You never know when/if it’s going to happen, but I am going to share with you what I did to get through, what could have felt like a disaster. I will also share what I learned along the way and how you can be prepared, just in case.
Always be prepared.
Let’s make a backup plan to ensure we have a strategy in place so we are ready if the need arises.
I have backup drives and a secondary computer that I use as my “participant view” in meetings and I am so happy that I have it! Although I don’t have everything on my backup computer, it will keep me going until I get my main computer back from the shop. Unfortunately that when a hard drive is replaced I still have to download and reinstall every application and software that I was using. This will take some time, which can be frustrating, but I just have to accept that these things can happen sometimes.
Not everything is on my backup computer…
I don’t have an exact clone of my main computer so there were some things that I had to set up to keep running smoothly. I had to rebuild my Outlook and connect with Microsoft Office to get my email up and running and revisit the websites that I use regularly.
If you have your email, calendar and other programs you use daily set up on a different computer, it will be much easier for you to get back up and running in the event of a crash. I highly recommend that you use a password program such as LastPass, it saved me this week! If you don’t use a password program, be sure to have all of your usernames and passwords in a safe place that you can easily access.
Some things to consider:
You can have a backup of your computer in a few different ways:
- Have a backup drive hooked up to your computer and have it set to back up daily
- Connect to “the Cloud” to ensure all of your files are accessible to you
- Use a secondary/clone computer (if it’s getting old, it may be time to add another option)
I will be creating a series of short videos to help walk you through the process of getting back up and running if technology fails. My goal is to ensure you are prepared in the event that you have a crash, or if you loose power, or your internet provider goes down.
