A Look Around ZOOM
And What About When You Don’t Want To Be On Camera?
Another episode of ‘Tools I use’: Zoom is a fantastic platform to use for online meetings, workshops or webinars. However, sometimes people don’t feel like being on camera. The video below provides a look around ZOOM, what to expect, how to log-in and how to navigate around the platform. You may also listen as a pod cast. This Blog’s Top 10 Tips, along with the video/podcast will help people who have never used the platform ZOOM before.
Facilitators
For facilitators and leaders, consider how your participants feel, when they don’t like to be on camera. We show up for a meeting, prepared to see people, however online meetings with a camera and mic, may be a new experience for some people. Ensure that your participants feel comfortable, and know what to expect.
Recording
I will sometimes record my online meetings or workshops for the option of a replay reference for the participants, however being recorded can be intimidating for those that aren’t used to it. Always ensure that everyone is aware of this process and what to expect. I ensure that people’s faces are not in the recording, by ‘pinning my video’ instead of seeing the gallery of everyone in the recording. If someone talks about something that is more confidential, then I cut that out of the recording before it is shared with a group.
Tips For The Best Experience
- 1. Log out of email, and other platforms, just leave ZOOM open, and other platforms that are needed for the workshop or meeting (sharing screens)
- 2. Ensure that people have a phone number to call in, if their computer does not have a mic. Also point out the Chat Box, and check it often.
- 3. Clarify that if internet signals become weak that the frame may freeze, and then will work again in a moment.
- 4. People have the option to mute themselves, or turn off their own camera, when they need to.
- 5. Be aware of what is behind you in the picture, on camera, especially if it will be recorded.
- 6. Introductions are important, and giving everyone a chance to contribute. Sometimes additional prompts may need to be encouraged, since some people may become less interactive in an online meeting.
- 7.Pause often to ask if there are any questions, since you may not be able to see everyone, if they don’t have cameras.
- 8.Screen sharing is a great option to see what people are looking at, to explain step by step instructions, or help someone to navigate a platform.
- 9. If you are recording the video, introduce self, and ensure there is a beginning and closing of the video, for the replay, and those that were not part of the meeting.
- 10. Be comfortable. Online meetings or workshops can be the best of both worlds, not having to travel, but also getting the opportunity to collaborate and build community with a group.
