Power Outage…OH NO!
Power outage is the worst-case scenario for virtual facilitators. We have options for your backup plans for what a virtual facilitator can do during a power outage. Do you have a plan if during the middle of an online meeting the power goes out? This is one thing that we can absolutely avoid by being prepared.
I am going to share with you how I have prepared for a power outage and the tools that make it possible for me to seamlessly stay online.
Preparation is key for a power outage.
It’s easy to keep things running smoothly if you set it up ahead of time.
For example, even if the power goes out for only a few seconds it can cause my internet modem to restart, which would kick all of us out of a meeting that I am hosting. Here are some options, so you can avoid any disasters:
I use an APC backup drive that works for about 2 hours or so. You can find a wide range of APC backup drives examples on Amazon. They range in price from under $100 up to over $1000. I bought mine locally at an office supply store for less than $200. (This is the one I purchased.)
If I know that the power will be out for longer than a couple of hours, I have a Jackery portable generator that will keep things running for an additional minimum of 3.5 hours, depending on how many items I have plugged into it. There are many models to choose from and a wide price range, plus solar panels as one option to recharge the device. (This does NOT require gas, it can be plugged into the wall or car to recharge.) I have the Jackery 1000. It was an over $1000 investment, but worth the security that I can keep supporting my clients and workshop participants and don’t have to reschedule.
I have both backups working together so when the APC battery is running low, the Jackery will take over.

What does a Virtual Facilitator do in the event of a power outage?
This is the first in a series of short videos to help walk you through the process of getting back up and running if technology fails.
My goal is to ensure you are prepared in the event that you have a crash, or if you lose power, or your internet provider goes down.
